Primary uses

  • Builds viscosity and suspends cuttings in water-based drilling fluids
  • Binds sand in foundry moulds for clean, repeatable metal casting
  • Seals ponds, landfills, and civil excavations by forming a low-permeability barrier

Oil and gas

  • Viscosifier and filtrate-control agent in drilling muds
  • Forms a thin filter cake that protects the formation
  • Stabilises boreholes in unconsolidated formations
03

Characteristics

  • High swelling capacity when hydrated (sodium bentonite)
  • Strong colloidal and thixotropic behaviour
  • Creates a low-permeability seal as it hydrates

Oil and gas

  • Performs across a wide pH range in drilling-fluid systems
  • Compatible with common water-based mud additives
04

Key properties

  • High cation-exchange capacity
  • Very large specific surface area when dispersed
  • Plastic and highly absorbent
  • Low permeability when fully hydrated
  • Thermally stable in typical drilling temperatures
